Audrey Hoff is one of the eighteen textile and apparel designers showing her collection at the annual Capstone Collection Fashion Show on April 27. In the following interview with University Fashion Group, she reveals details of her upcoming collection “Playground.”
BF: Tell me about yourself as an individual and a designer.
AH: I feel like I’ve been a creator for a long time. I believe that fashion is my art form, and the way I piece things together in my design and daily expression is how I find joy in my life. That led me down the path to fashion in general, as a way to express myself.
BF: Tell me about your creative process.
AH: I knew I wanted to do something really fun and lighthearted because I was scared of burning out. My collection is specifically a plus-size collection, so I definitely have a harder time finding what I’m looking for, especially alternative styles in my size. It was really important for me to see something like that, something I could create. Just to have a little more accessibility to items I could wear. I landed on something closer to childhood that expresses a cute playfulness and a youthful side.
BF: Tell me more about the inspiration behind your collection.
AH: I tried to incorporate a lot of patchwork and kids’ sheets combined with lace because I really wanted to portray that cute, youthful side of things. I wanted to create a collection that I could feel fun in and enjoy wearing. This skirt (Image 1) is made from scraps from Austin Creative Reuse and my grandma sent me some fabrics. The lace is something that I found in the lab. Most of them are pre-loved items and that was important to me because it already has a story. It’s already been through things and interacted with people. So, I like that it’s still being brought to life in a cute way. That’s what inspired me behind this specifically.
BF: How do you feel about your collection being revealed on the runway?
AH: I feel like a big part of it is going to be the movement of how fluffy and extra everything is. I’m really excited for everyone to see it, and I hope everyone has as much fun taking it in as I’ve had making it.
