Elvia Garcia is a senior Textiles and Design major at UT Austin. Throughout her life she has always had a predilection for the outdoors, and gravitates towards everything artsy, creative, and sustainable. As a designer, she has found most of her inspiration through Alexander Mcqueen and Maison Margiela as they engineer stories that blend into their garments.
Garcia’s philosophy is to always think about the why, which has greatly influenced her own creative process in her collection. The name of her collection is titled “Pequeño Pico Dorado” which in english translates to small gold beak. This was Garcia’s nickname, given by her grandmother, and cherishes it dearly which is why she decided to pick apart this nickname, what it means to her, and how she can tie it into her collection. As for her collection, it begins with a suit, which she correlates with being a peacock in pursuit of attracting other female birds, as this first piece is her only male design. “That’s kind of the concept, we’re all birds and it intertwines concepts of vulnerability and love,” said Garcia.
When Garcia looks back starting from her sketching the designs to draping and now finalizing the looks, she finds a sense of appreciation within herself and the journey it took for her to get to where she is now.
